Full ingredient labelling for pre-packed direct for sale food backed by the Food Standards Agency – do you need help?

This week, the Food Standards Agency reached a decision and advised to Ministers that full ingredients labelling should be mandatory for all pre-packed food for direct sale.

This came after several weeks consultation with the industry and other stakeholders following several serious incidents and in particular, the dramatic death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse who died after eating a "Pret-a-manger" sandwich.

Whether people feel that this is providing the right level of information or not, this will create a large amount of work and an increase cost for small independent food businesses. Labels will have to be created and information provided about ingredients and allergens.

The need and right to know what goes in the food that consumers purchase is a basic legitimate one. This push the accountability back firmly onto food businesses to understand what is in the food they purchase themselves to make their products. It is key that food businesses build a strong relationship with their suppliers to ensure that the ingredient list and the full ingredient declaration is easy to create.

The current media focus on this is helping businesses to change - the whole industry has to take more responsibility to educate and help consumers making informed decisions.

    1. Good afternoon
this article is really targeted at the UK market, I see from your website that you are based in the USA. The best way to understand more about labelling of food in the UK is to go to the Food Standard Agency website and to look for Food Information Regulations for Consumers.
